This classic red wine Spanish sangria is made with red wine, orange juice, brandy, Grand Marnie and lots of fresh citrus fruits. It’s a bold and refreshing cocktail.
It’s taken me a while to perfect the perfect red wine Spanish Sangria. Now I have the best sangria recipe that tastes exactly like one I had a few years ago in a Spanish Tapas restaurant. The problem is that I never asked for the recipe and like many family businesses a few years ago, they closed up shop. But that didn’t stop me from practicing and finally getting the flavors just right. A lot of Spanish and red wine sangrias have sugar as one of the ingredients. Because we like a more tart, more robust sangria, I don’t use any sugar. If you find this recipe is too bold or tart for you, go ahead and muddle the fruit with 1/3 of granulated sugar.
The other thing I really like about this red wine Spanish sangria is that it is light and refreshing enough for summertime by the pool or with a cookout. It’s also bold enough to take on a full steak dinner, like a good red wine. It’s also a warming cocktail while you’re warming by the fire on a cold winter evening. But beware, this sangria packs a mighty punch, so sip it slowly and enjoy the rice red wine, the warming brandy and Grand Marnie and the fresh fruit flavors.
If you are not familiar with Grand Marnie, it’s an orange-flavored liqueur made from brandy and orange bitters.
