This is one of our new favorite easy appetizers…grilled bread cheese. If you love cheese curds, you’ll love this recipe.

What is Bread Cheese?

Bread cheese is a dense squeaky-textured cheese that originated in Finland. It has a slightly sweet buttery flavor. It’s a lot like a Wisconsin Cheese Curd. It is not sold everywhere; I buy the Carr Valley brand from Aldi’s and it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other blocks of specialty cheese. While the Finnish version of bread cheese is made from Reindeer milk the brands available in the US are made from cow’s milk.

How do you Serve Bread Cheese?

I like to serve this as an appetizer on skewers with cherry tomatoes. I added some Everything Bagel Seasoning to the cheese and tomatoes to add a bit of zing. I also like to squeeze a bit of lemon juice over it.

For a sweeter version, serve it with honey or your favorite jam.

Ingredients

pint of cherry tomatoes and a package of bread cheese on a cutting board
  • Package Bread Cheese
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Lemon Slices
  • Everything Bagel Seasoning (optional) or another seasoning of your choice
  • Salt and Pepper

Let’s Learn How to Make Grilled Bread Cheese

  1. Cube the cheese into bite-sized pieces and place them in a small dish with cherry tomatoes.
  2. Add extra virgin olive oil.
  3. Lightly salt and pepper.
  4. If using seasoning, toss with seasoning.

  • Recommend buying the original flavor and adding your own seasonings.
  • You can serve this as an appetizer or snack. It also goes great on Cesar salad instead of croutons.
  • Soak skewers in water for 30-60 minutes prior to building skewers.
  • These can easily be made ahead of time and placed on the grill before you plan to serve them.

Hi Jackie, It originated in Finland and is a “squeaky” firm cheese, that does not melt quickly or easily making it perfect for grilling indoors or outdoors. You can buy it at both Aldi and Trader Joe’s.
