Why We Love These Beans

These are the best-baked beans I’ve ever made, and I’ve been testing and making baked beans for years. They are super simple to make; just add a few pantry staples to canned beans and transform them into this sweet-smoke dish of beans that are irresistible.

Ingredients

  • Baked beans
  • Pork and beans (substitute a second can of baked beans)
  • Bacon
  • Jalapeno
  • Beef broth
  • BBQ sauce
  • Molasses
  • Brown sugar
  • Ketchup
  • Minced garlic
  • Dry mustard

Let’s Make Easy Homemade Baked Beans

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 325°.
  2. Spray an 11×7 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Dice the jalapeno into small pieces.
  4. Cook the bacon until crispy, and cool on a plate covered with a paper towel. Reserve 2 tbsp of the bacon fat drippings.
  5. When the bacon is cool, crumble it with your hands and set it aside.

To Make the Baked Beans

  1. Add the 2 tbsp bacon fat to a skillet or pot.
  2. Add the garlic and diced jalapeno and cook for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  3. Add the beef broth and bring it to a boil. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the BBQ sauce, molasses, ketchup, sugar, and dry mustard.
  5. Stir in ½ of the crumbled bacon.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish.
  7. Top with the remaining crumbled bacon.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and allow it to cool and thicken for 20 minutes.

Krazy Kitchen Mom Tips

  • The beans will appear loose when you remove them from the oven. Let the beans sit for 20 minutes and they thicken to the perfect consistency.
  • Pork and Beans substitution: a second can of baked beans.
  • To discard bacon fat, allow it to cool to room temperature for several hours. Transfer it to a sturdy freezer zip-top bag. Place the bag of grease in the freezer overnight and discard it in the morning.
