Ditch the store-bought salad dressing and make homemade. It’s easy, it’s delicious, and you can control the amount and the ingredients. My Buttermilk Salad Dressing is creamy, full of herb and spices and has just the right amount of tanginess.

What is buttermilk anyway?

Buttermilk is the liquid that is left over once the process for churning butter is done. It naturally ferments which gives it that bright tangy flavor. This type of buttermilk is called churned buttermilk. Most of the buttermilk sold today is what is called cultured buttermilk because live cultures are added to milk to make the tangy flavor. Like yogurt, buttermilk is a good source for probiotics.

Other uses for buttermilk

It’s difficult to buy a small bottle of buttermilk, trust me on this, I’ve looked everywhere. So when I buy buttermilk, I usually use it for other recipes too. You can use it to make:

  1. Make Buttermilk pancakes.
  2. Fried chicken – dredge or marinate the chicken in buttermilk before breading and frying.
  3. Buttermilk gives great tang in dips like dill dip, ranch dip, blue cheese dip, or any other dip that uses milk, mayonnaise, or sour cream.
  4. Substitute buttermilk for sour cream in cakes.
  5. Make buttermilk biscuits.
  6. Use it in mashed potatoes.
  7. Use it as a glaze for donuts or a cake.

We all know that the salad dressing makes the salad but have some fun with your salads.

  1. Use mason jars for a grab and go salad for work or school.
  2. Add some pasta to give added texture and flavor.
  3. Make salad wedges.
  4. Build your own salad bar – have an assortment of ingredients and dressings and let everyone build their own.
  5. Salad pizza! Add a handful of tossed salad to a pizza and you have an entire meal in one bite.
  6. Add meat or fish and make it a full salad meal.
  7. Make a chopped salad lettuce wrap – a salad in a salad.
  8. Layer the ingredients.
  9. Plie a salad high.
  10. Make a salad kabob – handheld salad.
  11. Make a salad wrap.
